Aviva and David Markowitz moved to Bergenfield from Wesley Hills in 1999 and almost immediately became involved in the Shul in a variety of capacities.  With their wonderful children, Zev, Azriel, Ilana, Talya and Shana, the entire Markowitz family has and continues to make contributions in almost every aspect of our Kehillah.

David has served in numerous roles – both official and unofficial – in the Shul.  He has served as the Shul Secretary on the Executive Committee for 1 year and as a Board member for 3 years. He has also helped coordinate fund raising efforts that have provided thousands of dollars for worthy causes in Eretz Yisrael.  David is also the key “architect” of the Shul’s sukkah and has produced and installed the various mechitzos for our minyanim, and will even change light bulbs or fix the Paroches when needed.  Most recently David organizes a weekly chabura in Rav Moshe’s Teshuvos and was involved in helping create the Parent-Child Minyan and our Teen Zone, which coordinates various weekday and Shabbos activities for our ever growing teen population.

Aviva is also extremely involved in various aspects of the Shul.  She is currently in her second term as the Sisterhood Treasurer, has served as Sisterhood President and has coordinated a number of events for the Shul including Meet the Members and the Lag B’Omer Barbecue.  Aviva has served on several Shul chessed and dinner committees and has also been on the Youth Committee for 6 years, where she has provided thoughtful and creative ideas on ways to enhance the Youth programming of the Shul.  Aviva and David also encourage all of their children to help out the Shul whether it be building the Shul sukkah or packing thousands of candy bags for Simchas Torah.

Please join us in thanking Aviva and David for their continued dedication and service to the Congregation Beth Abraham family.

A very well deserving and special couple, Ari and Ilana Erdfarb, will be the recipients of our Max Sternbach Service award this year.  They have been significant contributors to our Kehillah since their move to Bergenfield in 2006, and are always ready to assist with various projects regardless of size.

In an official capacity, Ari has served the Shul as a Board member from 2009 through 2012.  For the past three years, he has worked hard on the Yomim Noraim seating committee.  No less important, Ari has been a major player in many of the behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the Shul functioning at maximum potential.  Coordinating the heating and air conditioning for all our buildings, troubleshooting for building related issues, managing the cell phone, internet, telephone and copier plans for the Shul office, producing flyers and brochures for our Shul events, and even cleaning the office at times, are all examples of Ari's unofficial job description.  In his unassuming manner he has had a significant impact on the daily functioning of the Shul.

As a second generation Beth Abraham member, Ilana follows in the footsteps of her parents by demonstrating to her own children the importance of being involved in Shul life.  Ilana has served on Sisterhood committees, helping to run many of its successful events as well as serving on the Shul welcoming committee for two years.  Ilana's perpetual smile combined with her genuine warmth and friendly manner have significantly added to the wonderful feelings of achdus within Beth Abraham.

Ilana and Ari continue to serve as role models and set an example for us as they make aliyah to Israel with their family this summer.  We feel fortunate that we have the opportunity to show hakaras hatov to this wonderful couple before they leave by honoring them with the Max Sternbach Service Award.
