The Warrior's World:

Understanding the Mental Health Needs of Veterans

First Annual Excellence in Clinical Practice Symposium

Introduction

At a time when the suicide rate for Veterans outnumbers combat-related deaths, mental health professionals must be more prepared than ever to serve Veterans effectively and competently.  This symposium offers clinicians the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and life experience of Veterans and their families, while also learning effective strategies for addressing issues such as combat-related PTSD, reintegration, grief/loss, military sexual assault, and more.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Fairchild, is a well-known psychologist who served over 20 years in the Army, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.  In his private practice, he specializes in helping Veterans and their families cope with the effects of war, and with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in particular.  He has been a presenter at a number of national and international conferences, including the International Congress of the Critical Incident Stress Foundation conference.  Dr. Fairchild also co-founded Welcome Home Vets, Inc., a not-for-profit organization designed to support returning Florida Veterans with their transition and reintegration into the community.

In addition to our keynote address, a number of breakout sessions will offer attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into specific topics related to serving Veterans, as well as their spouses and children.  Dr. Fairchild will co-lead the session on PTSD along with Dr. Bill Vagianos, a military Veteran, experienced psychologist, and President of the Brevard Veteran's Memorial Center.  All other breakout session speakers are also experienced Veteran-serving professionals who have a strong military connection, either through their own service or as a military spouse.

Finally, a Veteran Services Resource Fair will be offered at lunch and our final session of the day will be a Q&A session with a panel of Veterans who can offer direct insight into the mental health needs of themselves and their fellow warriors.

Effective treatment for Veterans and their families starts with gaining a deeper understanding of the world in which they live.

Session D: Assisting Military Family Members - This session focuses on understanding the impact of living with a military member.  It will include strategies for helping children, spouses, and parents of military members cope with issues such as deployment, reintegration, trauma, physical injury/disability, and grief/loss.
