Students with disabilities and special learning needs are usually included with typical peers in art and music classes, but there are often challenges both for the “specials” teachers and the aides accompanying students to these classes.

This workshop will address a variety of barriers to learning and successful participation, and explore how individual aides can assist in overcoming these barriers. Discussion will focus on ways to provide support and work out adaptive strategies so that the classes work well for both the individual students and for their teachers and classmates.

The workshop will include hands-on examples of art and music activities so that participants may actively engage in adaptive arts experiences. It will also include plenty of opportunity for questions  and sharing, as well as demonstration of adaptive tools and equipment which can be easily made to fit the specific needs of individual students.  There will be an exchange of practical strategies for helping with behavioral, developmental and physical challenges.

Presenter Deborah Stuart has spent decades working with young children and their teachers around the world. She serves as a national consultant and trainer in the field of arts and learning, and is the author of Start with the Arts, which links children’s literature and the arts as early learning tools.

Presented by: The Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and VSA New Hampshire as part of their ongoing Arts in Inclusive Learning collaboration, provided under a contract with the John F.
