For teaching artists in all disciplines and at all stages of their careers

Note: This workshop is also offered at other New Hampshire locations on June 17 and 26 and in Cambridge, MA on June 20.

Meeting the needs of a diverse range of students in residency experiences as well as in other school and out-of-school settings has always been a challenge for teaching artists. This is particularly true when classes or groups include students with significant disabilities or special learning needs.

This workshop will address the many considerations which present themselves when designing arts experiences, including residency classes, projects and culminating events.  The emphasis will be on practical strategies and ways to problem-solve situations where there are barriers to the successful participation of one or more students.

The basis for this workshop is a Universal Design for Learning approach to residencies and other teaching artist-led activities.  This approach includes:

 * offering students information about the arts experience in a wide variety of ways as they learn what the residency/classes will include

 * ensuring that opportunities for participation reflect a complete range of modalities so that there are ways for all students to create and learn and to show what they know

 * designing activities that are engaging for all students and that tap into their individual interests and abilities

The workshop will include opportunities for teaching artists to share their experiences, both successful and not-so-successful.   There will also be plenty of opportunity for questions, discussion and practice in practical problem solving for situations which often present themselves in inclusive classroom settings.

The workshop will offer foundational information and also hands-on art and music examples which demonstrate the UDL principles in action.

The presenters will also introduce adaptive tools, many of which can be easily created to fit particular unique needs, and will review communication tools and systems for students who are not verbal.  In addition, attention will be given to strategies for positive ways to deal with difficult behaviors which might be an issue for students with emotional disabilities.

Deborah Stuart has spent decades working with young children and their teachers around the world. She serves as a national consultant and trainer in the field of arts and learning, and is the author of Start with the Arts, which links children’s literature and the arts as early learning tools.

Deborah will be joined by longtime VSA roster artist Will Cabell, an educator, puppeteer, actor and musician.

Presented by: The Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and VSA New Hampshire as part of their ongoing Arts in Inclusive Learning collaboration, provided through a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Our thanks to AVA Gallery & Arts Center for hosting this workshop.
