The Autism Society Inland Empire is presenting a mini-camp, Adventures in Communicating, for individuals with ASD ages 13 to 20 who use augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) devices. A caregiver, therapist or teacher must attend with the camper. Using fun and games, children and caregivers will increase their proficiency in using AAC. Professionals and students in the education and communication fields, along with parents and family members, will be taught how to facilitate expressive communication through AAC
This camp will be run under the direction of Darlene Hanson, MA, CCC of WAPADH. Darlene is considered a national expert in working with individuals who are “non verbal” and use alternate modes of communication, as well as in the area of speech development for persons with severe motor apraxia as it relates to autism.

3. Social Competence - Campers/family members/volunteers will increase their knowledge of interactional use of AAC tools and devices. This includes using AAC for a range of communicative purposes in conversations, and developing knowledge, judgment, and skills in the interpersonal aspects of communication.
