We are very excited to bring ALL LOCAL DESIGNERS the design-build competition WINDOW. As the second design competition for 2013 from the Design Competitions Committee, under the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Philadelphia Associate Committee. This competition is both an event and service to connect you with local businesses through WINDOW, we want to help promote YOUR skills as designers through low budget-high impact design solutions.

The Charette | August 13

 We will bring together local designers, a panel of consultants, and participating store owners to the Center for Architecture (1218 Arch Street) for a Charette to work your magic. Our Charette will include introductions, two rounds of design and consulting, feedback in between, and the announcement of the design winners within three hours. At the Charette, individual and team designers will be introduced to all the store owners. Each store owner will have up to five (5) minutes to introduce and share their business philosophy and mission, merchandise, and audience. After these introductions, business owners will be asked to share their goal, objective, or need for a designed window display. Followed by a brief Q&A for you to ask any questions before the first design segment (approximately 45-60 minutes). During this segment you are allowed to ask questions to the panel, who have had experience in window display design. At the end of the segment we will have our first pin-up, and you will be given feedback before returning to the second segment (approximately 20-30 minutes). Window design(s) will be selected at the conclusion of the event. Designers will be asked to indicate a budget and list of materials necessary to complete the window design for the final pin-up.

Post-Charette | 1-2 Weeks After Charette

After the winning design(s) are selected, the designer(s) will have 1 week to collect all materials needed for the construction of their design, and coordinate with the business owner when construction can take place at the business location. The following week will be the unveiling of the window.

If you should agree to participate in WINDOW we ask that you commit to the following:

  • Bring any design supplies to help convey your concept and idea.
  • If you will be competing as a team, please make sure all team members have registered.
  • Tell your friends that you’re competing and invite them to attend the event.
  • Remember low budget, HIGH impact.
  • Participating businesses: Save Some Green, 20th & Chestnut Streets.
  • Be creative.
  • Have fun!
