Fabricate a Spirit House full of meaning and symbolism in this 2-day workshop with nationally and internationally renowned Mixed Media artist, Carol Owen.

In Part I, Carol will teach students to construct a shrine telling a personal story. Using photos and memorabilia special to you, apply simple materials and techniques including assemblage and collage, to build a house-like structure rich in personal meaning.

In Part II, students will learn to make a base with drawers for their House, and can “remodel” their House with niches and additions to hold mementos. This is a chance to make a personal shrine, perhaps to someone special in your life, to a favorite place, a remembered trip, a beloved pet, or perhaps a fun event you’d like to commemorate. Carol will show you how to make the shrine, what you choose to celebrate is up to you!

 Carol is a professional artist who’s mixed media work has appeared in numerous publications and is featured in private collections around the world. She is the author of Crafting Personal Shrines, Lark Books, 2004 and an upcoming, comprehensive book about Altered Books. Carol is an American Craft Council member who exhibits at ACC Baltimore and the CDC annual show in Raleigh. Her studio is regularly featured on the annual Chatham County studio tour. Carol lives and works in Pittsboro, NC.

Supply List

• One 3/16" or  thicker piece of foam board (Thinner than this will not work.) (Askew Taylor Paints or Jerry’s Artarama)

• Glue for paper: Sobo

• Glue for embellishments: Weldbond or gel medium

• 2 or 3 colors of acrylic paint: fluid or tube acrylics or Lumieres (Askew Taylor Paints or Jerry’s Artarama)

• Photocopies of paper items such as photographs, letters, maps, etc. Make certain these items will fit in a 4" X 5" format.

• Embellishments: beads, buttons, keys, charms, shells, etc. other bits and pieces you have on hand

  • We also offer youth parties for those under 14 years old.
• Some advanced classes require specific beading experience, please read the descriptions carefully and do not sign up for classes unless you have the required experience.

• Q: When can I take an "Intermediate" class?
  A: Some intermediate classes require specific experience, please read the descriptions carefully and do not sign up for classes unless you have the required experience.

• Q: Are all materials provided in the classes?
  A: Tools and materials are provided for some classes, please read descriptions carefully. If a class requires you to bring your own supplies please request the supply list at time of registration. • Q: Can I bring my own materials to the classes?
  A: Participants who have their own tools are strongly encouraged to bring them to the class. Participants may bring their own materials to incorporate into class projects whenever feasible.
