Painting Competition Prospectus

The Paint Herndon Painting Competition is designed in the spirit of a "day painting” competition, which challenges artists to create works of art in a short period of time.  There are 3 division, each with their own cash prizes:

Requirements and Eligibility:

  • All artwork must be done on stamped canvases or other stamped material suitable to the medium.
  • All artists are encouraged to create artwork outside “en plein air” without the assistance of photographs.  
  • Artwork in the following mediums will be accepted:  oil, water-based oils, acrylics, watercolors, tempera, pastels, and pen and ink.  No photography, electronic, or computer generated/assisted art or reproductions are eligible.  Mixed media and collage are acceptable as long as they are 50% painted or drawn and do not include photography, electronic, or computer generated/assisted element.
  • Artists may paint or draw subjects of their choice with the following limitations. No nudes and no graphically violent work will be accepted in the competition.
  •  Artists may paint or draw at any location.  All artists, especially plein air artists are encouraged, but not required, to create their artwork in historic and/or downtown Herndon. 
  • Plein air artists are expected to be respectful and not obstruct traffic, pedestrians, or the W&OD trail.
  • All artwork must be original work created by the artist entering the piece.
  • No copyrighted source material permitted.
  • All artists must register and pay the registration fee to participate.
  • Artists may enter up to three (3) pieces of artwork, which are covered by the single entry fee.

Registration:  Artists can register and pay the entry fee in advance or at the canvas stamping: 

  • By Mail:  Please mail entry form and payment to ArtSpace Herndon, PO Box 916, Herndon, VA 20172-0916.  Mailed entries must be postmarked by Saturday, September 14, 2013.
  • Online:  Click on the "register now" button below. 
  • In Person:  Walk in registrations will be accepted at ArtSpace Herndon during regular hours and at the canvas stampings.  Payment by cash, check, or credit card will be accepted.

Entry Fee:  The entry fee for up to 3 entries varies by Division. 

  • Adults - $20 in advance, $25 at canvas stamping
  • Teens - $10 in advance, $15 at canvas stamping
  • Youth - $10 in advance, $15 at canvas stamping

Canvas Stamping:  There will be two opportunities for canvas stamping at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon.
       a)     Friday, September 20 from 3PM-7PM, and
       b)     Saturday, September 21st beginning at 9AM and ending at Noon.

  • An unlimited number of canvases or other material may be stamped.
  • Artist must supply his/her own canvases and materials. 
  • Canvases may be primed, but must otherwise be blank before stamping. 

Submitting Artwork for Judging:  Artwork must be completed, properly labeled, prepared for display, and delivered on time in order to be included in the judging and eligible for prizes.

All artists must return with their completed artwork no later than 3:30pm on Saturday, September 21, 2013 to ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170. 

Labeling:  The Artist is responsible for labeling the artwork with the Artist’s name, division (adult, teen, youth), the title, location, medium and price prior to judging.

Framing and Preparation for Display:  Artwork must be prepared for display when submitted for judging.

  • Adult division - Framing is required.  
  • Teen and Youth Division - Framing is optional.
  • Gallery wrap is acceptable.

All canvases and frames should be wired for hanging (no clips or saw tooth hangers).  Unframed works will be hung by clips on display panels or taped to the wall using painters tape at the artist’s own risk.

Judging:  Judging will begin when all the artwork is checked in and displayed. 

  • Prizes for first, second, and third place; grand prize; and honorable mention will be based on artistic merit.
  • The newly created prize, the Old Town Herndon Award in the amount of $300, will be given to the best artwork featuring historic and/or downtown Herndon.
  • The decision of the judges is final.

Awards Presentation:  Prizes will be awarded at the end of the reception on the day of the competition, Saturday, September 21, 2013.  The reception begins at 3:30pm and the winners will be announced no earlier than 5pm.

Exhibit Opportunity:  All artists registered for the Painting Competition are invited to exhibit at least one of their entries through October 27, 2013.  Pieces will be exhibited in the ArtLab or Sapphire Gallery at ArtSpace Herndon. 

Sales:  All entries will be available for sale at a price of the artist's choosing unless marked "not for sale".   

  • Artists entering the competition agree to pay a 25% commission to ArtSpace Herndon for artwork sold during the Painting Competition reception and during the exhibit.
  • All adult artists offering their work for sale will be asked to complete an IRS W-9. 
  • ArtSpace Herndon will handle all sales and pay the applicable sales tax. 
Pick up of Artwork:  Artists are responsible for picking up any unsold artwork in a timely manner.
  • On Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the end of Paint Herndon reception, from 6:00pm -7:00pm, or
  • At the end of the exhibit on:
    *  Sunday, October 27th, 1pm-5pm, or
    *  Monday, October 28th, 10am - 12 noon, or
    *  by appointment.
  • All artwork left over 30 days will be considered a donation to ArtSpace.

Rights:  The Artist grants ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts the right to photograph and use images of the artist working and images of artwork featured in the Paint Herndon Painting Competition for promotional purposes. 

Liability:  Artwork displayed in and around ArtSpace Herndon will be exhibited at the artist’s own risk.  The Artist is responsible for insuring, delivering and picking up his/her artwork.

Agreement: By entering the competition, artists agree to abide by all competition rules.  Failure to comply with these rules constitutes withdrawal from the competition.

The artist also agrees to not hold ArtSpace Herndon, Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, Town of Herndon, and/or their employees or volunteers responsible for injury, property damage, or theft of any kind related to their participation in the events associated with Paint Herndon 2013.
