"Commodities - A Brave New World?"


Registration begins at 6:00 pm for a prompt 6:30 pm start. The panel will last for one hour, followed by a brief reception and refreshments.

A distinguished panel has been organised for the event, which will address challenges and opportunities in the sector, with particular focus on new sources of oil and gas, and shifts in traditional physical and financial trade flows.

Dr. Hélyette Geman

Dr Helyette Geman is a Professor of Finance at Birkbeck, University of London where she is the Director of the Commodity Finance Centre and John Hopkins University.  She is a graduate of Ecole Normale Superieure in Mathematics, holds a Masters degree in Theoretical Physics and a PhD in Probability and a PhD in Finance. She has published more than 120 papers in international Journals and has worked for major commodity companies such as EDF Trading, Louis Dreyfus, Bunge, BHP Billiton.

Her book Commodities and Commodity Derivatives: Energy, Metals and Agriculturals published by Wiley Finance in January 2005 has become the reference book in the field.  Prof Geman is a Member of the Board of the UBS- Bloomberg Commodity Index.


Mr. Jan-Hein Jesse

Mr Jesse is the founder of JOSCO Energy Finance & Strategy Consultancy.  Through JOSCO, Mr Jesse consults for PWC Global Oil & Gas and serves as a Senior Expert to the International Energy Agency (IEA).  Prior to JOSCO, Mr Jesse was the CFO of Heerema Marine Contractors and a Senior Executive at Royal Dutch Shell, responsible for large-scale acquisitions and divestments.  While at Shell, Mr Jesse was part of a select cadre of New Business Development Leaders with the authority to lead transactions over $1 billion.  Before joining Shell, Mr Jesse was Head of the Oil & Gas Finance Department at ING. 

Mr Jesse is a recognised authority and speaker on Oil & Gas Markets, and price formation.  He has successfully concluded over 50 transactions on all continents, serving a variety of clients, such as; oil and gas companies, commodity traders, oil service companies, private equity firms, hedge and pension funds.

Mr. Michael Lewis

Michael is a Managing Director and the Global Head of Commodities Research at Deutsche Bank in London.  Michael's group analyses the macro fundamental forces driving commodity markets with the ultimate aim of delivering directional, curve and volatility trading strategies across the four broad commodity sectors. The team also assess the properties of commodities as a distinct asset class, which is illustrated by the Bank’s award winning suite of commodity index products.  In the 2013 EMEA Institutional Investor Equity & Fixed Income Research team survey, Deutsche Bank’s Commodities Research team ranked #2.  Before joining Commodities Research in 2003, Michael was the Deputy Head of Foreign Exchange Research at Deutsche Bank where he had worked for the previous seven years.  Michael holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Ms. Hilary Till

Ms Till is a Principal at Premia Capital Management, LLC, a proprietary trading company based in Chicago.  She also serves as a Research Associate at EDHEC-Risk Institute and is a Member of the North American Advisory Board for the London School of Economics.  Ms Till is a respected speaker, researcher and author, known for her work as Co-Editor of “Intelligent Commodity Investing”.

Mr. Alan Williamson

Mr Williamson is the Chief Economist at Galena Asset Management Ltd, London. Having joined the firm in April 2006, Mr Williamson is responsible for macro and microanalysis including the Group’s supply and demand balances.  He has over 26 years of experience in commodities research, having previously served at HSBC as Head of Commodities Research, Deutsche Bank as a Senior Commodity Analyst, and the CRU Group as a Senior Commodity Consultant.  Mr Williamson holds a MA in Economics from Cambridge University.
