Please note...If you want to take the CA DPA & Infection Control courses AND CPR, do not sign up for the morning CPR course, as the CA DPA & Infection Control are offered ONLY in the morning and most mortals cannot be in two places at one time!

California Dental Practice Act (2 CE Units)

This course will provide an overview and update of the California Dental Practice Act, including the Business and Professions Code(Sections 1600-1699;1740-1777; 1900-1966) and the related California Code of Regulations(section 1000-1099). Topics covered will include:  utilization and scope of practice for auxiliaries and dentists; license renewal, revocation and suspension; continuing education requirements; acts which constitute violation of the Dental Practice Act, including unprofessional conduct; citations and fines for violations; prescriptions; and, mandated reporting obligations for licentiates This course meets the minimum course contents requirements for the Dental Practice Act and includes the following areas of the California Dental Practice Act:

  • Business and Professions Code; Sections 1600-1699; 1740-1777  and 1900-1966.6
  • Penal Code: Section 11164 et.seq.(Child Abuse and Reporting)
  • Welfare and Institutions Code: Section  15600 etc seq ((Elder Abuse and Adult Civil Protection)
  • California Code of Regulations: Title 16: Section 1000-1099

 Course Objectives:  Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the basic utilization and scope of practice for dental auxiliaries and dentists.
  • Discuss the licensing categories for dental auxiliaries.
  • Discuss license renewal for licentiates in California including continuing education requirements.
  • Discuss suspension and revocation of licenses.
  • Identify violations of the Dental Practice Act including unprofessional conduct.
  • Identify areas outside the scope of practice for dentists, hygienists and assistants in California.
  • Review citations and fines related to violations of the California Dental Practice Act.
  • Discuss the laws governing the prescription of drugs.
  • Review the mandated reporting statutes for dental licentiates in California for children, adults and elders; and, give examples of reportable clinical signs.
  • Review new and pending regulations affecting dental licentiates Ellen Standley

Ellen Standley, RDH, BS, MA, is a long time active member of the Sacramento Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association.  She is a graduate of the University of California San Francisco Dental Hygiene Program and holds Master's Degrees from the University of San Francisco and California State University at Sacramento. Ellen is recently retired from a career as an educator at Sacramento City College.  A past president of CDHA, Ellen currently serves on the Membership Council and the Journal Editorial Advisory Board.  Other professional affiliations include the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and the California Dental Hygiene Educators’ Association.

Infection Control With A Twis t (2 CE Units)
Ever sit through an infection control class and wish you could nod off? Noel Kelsch RDH
decided to change that using humor and cutting edge information. This course will give you up to date and practical information designed to keep both the clinician and the client safe. Stressing the essential value of breaking the chain of infection at every level, attendees will return to their offices equipped with practical, clearly defined steps to ensure adequate infection control in the dental setting. Utilizing Noel’s OSHA designated outreach trainer status, this course includes an update on the OSHA and CDC recommendations.

Noel Brandon-Kelsch is an international speaker, writer and Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice. She is passionate about oral health and has the uncanny ability to motivate and enlighten audiences through her unique humor and cutting edge information. She takes tough subject matter and presents it in such an interesting way that it becomes thought provoking even to those not involved in her industry. She is the infection control columnist for RDH magazine, a syndicated newspaper columnist, has been published in many books. She has brought the message of oral health to media networks from Disney Radio to ESPN. Noel has received many national awards including Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures, RDH Magazine Sun Star Butler Award of Distinction, USA magazine Make a Difference Day Award, President’s Service Award, Foster Parent of the Year, Hu-Friedy Master Clinician Award and as if that isn’t enough: she is also a five time winner of the Castroville Artichoke cook off! Noel is a Past President of the California Dental Hygienist’s Association, Board Member of the Santa Barbara Ventura Dental Care Foundation, First Five, Sunstar America, GC America, Philip Life Style and Kerr Total Care, Hu Friedy, Orascoptic, Dux Dental, American Eagle, Key Organization Leader, member and Newsletter Editor for the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures. Noels’ clinical research in cross contamination has helped facilitate many changes in the infection control industry.

CPR Refresher Course (3.5 CE Units) Includes CPR Card

Title:  Healthcare Provider Refresher Course 
American Heart Association 
Time: 3.5 hours
CEUs: 3.5 contact hours of CEUs are provided at no additional charge (provider #4679)
Course Fee: $55 when registering on-line*

Description:  In this American Heart Association re-certification course, you will learn one and two-person technique for adult, child, infant CPR, AED, and barrier use. This course is a refresher for all previously certified dental staff even if your certification has recently lapsed. This course is approved by the CA Board of Consumer Affairs/Dental Board of California. Optional textbooks are $15 and are available in class. A two-year certification card is issued from the American Heart Association upon successful completion.

Sacramento Valley Dental Hygienists' Association is not responsible for the registration of either CPR course options.  Please select the appropriate time slot below for the time you would like to attend. (If you want to attend either the "CA Practice Act" or "Infection Control", you need to register above).
