Where’s Ollie?
Ollie the Onion has a lot of a-peel.
He sprouted up in Sherwood;
To have a good meal.
Craving some, beans, and Firemen’s Chicken;
He headed to Archer Glen;
For food that’s finger lickin’.
Contests and shopping, music and friends;
Ollie has a blast at the Great Onion Festival;
From 9 am until 4, when it ends.
The second Saturday in October, next year;
We’ll find him again;
Aromatic and sweet, Ollie the Onion brings Sherwood cheer!
His pals say he has them laughing until they cry;
His joy shared throughout the community;
He’s just that loveable of a guy.

Great Onion Festival Is History and Total Family Fun In the early 20th century, Italian farmers settled in the Sherwood area and prospered with bumper onion crops from the high water level in Sherwood fields. In a time when transporting foods was regionally limited, Sherwood gained dominance as the prime onion supplier for cities all along the Pacific Coast. “Sherwood owes much of its development to the onion, in fact Cipolla, as in Cipole Road, is Italian for onion,” explained Dr. Ben Aanderud, Chairman of the 27th annual Sherwood Great Onion Festival. On stage this year, the highly popular “Reptile Man” will thrill festival goers with his herd of snakes and lizards. New and better-than-ever talented individuals and community and school groups will also provide stage entertainment. The Great Onion Festival menu includes a barbecue chicken dinner accompanied by a baked onion, baked beans and Cole slaw served up by the Sherwood Old Town Rotary Club and volunteers. Onion aficionados are invited to prepare their best onion-inclusive recipe in “Best Dang Onion Dish in Sherwood.” A panel of local notables will judge the prepared onion dishes. For young ones there’s the onion rolling contest and face and pumpkin painting. The onion-eating contest is open to all brave souls. Raffle prizes add a bit of a gamble to the day. Over 30 product, service and craft vendors will also be hosted at Onion Festival. The festival is presented by Pacific Family Dental, Bittner Dentistry for Kids, and Wilson Orthodontics. The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Sherwood Chamber of Commerce. |
