Art Therapy in a forensic setting: Rikers Island
Lesley Achitoff, LCAT, ATR-BC
This lecture will present examples of work produced in women’s and adolescent boys groups on Rikers Island. Much of the focus in these groups is on contact with families and celebrations of the holidays the inmates miss. Another focus is skill-building as many of the patients/inmates yearn for these skills and gain a feeling of self-worth when they are mastered. Examples of work using limited materials will be shown and discussed as well as the diagnostic process of work produced in groups.Lesley Achitoff, LCAT, ATR-BC has been working with at-risk and court-involved youth since 2003 as an Art Therapist for Heart Share Human Services, the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES), and as a Creative Art Therapy Coordinator on Rikers Island. Lesley also facilitates a group for court-involved youth associated with Good Shepherd Services under the auspices of Art Therapy Outreach Center (ATOC).
