Across the U.S., financial literacy education is a major educational focus for students in middle and high school. FCS teachers have been addressing it for many years, but now it is a national priority…and a golden opportunity for FCS.
Angela De Hart advocates collaboration as a way to strengthen students’ money management skills and at the same time, demonstrate how FCS supports STEM. Her “FUN Money Management” process has transformed students–for the better–in ways that teachers never could have imagined. By applying these techniques, you will have a unique opportunity to evaluate first-hand what your students have learned about money and how it influences their behavior.
In just 90 minutes, you’ll learn:
- How to collaborate with the Math department around finance/money management.
- The correlations between FCS National standards and Math National standards.
- How to use the “money management” process as a student behavior modification tool.
- How to demonstrate that FCS Financial Literacy curriculum supports STEM.
- Where to gather more ideas.
A wide array of resources will be provided to reinforce what you learn at the webinar, including: forms for use right away, outlines of specific examples of class activities, websites, blogs, books, and documentation processes.
After this webinar, you will be able to:
- Start Fun Money Management in your class immediately.
- Obtain and create materials you can use to prepare for class.
- Adapt the process to different learning styles, and to students with disabilities. For example, activities range from using class “money” to run a lemonade stand or using student earned “money” to participate in a silent auction.
- Implement a long version and a short version of the Fun Money Management process.
- Show your students how to have fun at the end of class with the “money” earned from class finance activities!
- Initiate the collaboration process with your Math Department.
About the Presenter:
Angela DeHart is a family and consumer sciences teacher at Glasgow Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia. Ms. DeHart holds a master's degree in Organizational Development from Johns Hopkins University. She also is certified to teach both FCS and Business classes and has taught both during her 5 years as a Fairfax County teacher. This background serves her well as she turns her training and skill into the support needed to take her two student Virginia State winners to 2013 Nationals Conference, while also feeding her passion for designing FCS curriculum for the 21st century.
