The City of Sacramento's "Big 5" Projects Update

There are several large and exciting projects being developed in the Sacramento region!  Mr. Way will provide updates on the following five projects:

• Entertainment and Sports Center - The City of Sacramento is moving forward with the new ownership of the Sacramento Kings, Sacramento Basketball Holdings, LLC, on plans for a new entertainment and sports center (ESC) in downtown Sacramento. The center will be located at the current Downtown Plaza site.  This venue will serve as a major economic development tool for the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento region.  The 12 to 14 month Project Design and Development process began in April 2013 with the issuance of a Notice of Preparation (NOP).  Proposed construction of the new ESC will begin in the summer of 2014 and will be open in October 2016.
• Streetcar System - Sacramento, West Sacramento, and local transit agencies are working on a joint venture to develop a streetcar system to connect both sides of the river.  The streetcar is another element of the overall solution to provide improved connectivity and multiple modes of travel throughout the regions' commercial corridors.
• New Bridges - There are several new bridges proposed to connect West Sacramento with the capital.  The I Street Bridge is proposed to be replaced with a new structure just to the north which will connect West Sacramento to the downtown railyard.  Another bridge may be built to the south, linking to Broadway in Sacramento.  The routes for the new bridges have yet to be firmed up.
• Delta Shores - This proposed development is an 800-acre project of 5,200 homes, 1.3 million square feet of retail space, and other commercial development.  It is expected to be developed upon completion of the 3.5-mile extension project connecting Freeport Blvd on the west to Franklin Blvd on the east and including the new I-5 interchange with the extended Cosumnes River Blvd.
• Intermodal Transportation - The City of Sacramento is transforming the downtown's historic train depot (Sacramento Valley Station) into a transportation hub to serve all modes of travel to and from the station, including passenger train, light rail, bus, taxi, rental car, and bicycle.  Phase Two, which involves renovation of the historic depot, is currently underway. 

About our Speaker:

Jerry Way oversees the Transportation Department for the City of Sacramento, which includes five areas of public service: Engineering Services, Traffic Engineering, Parking Services, Street Services, and Urban Forestry, all supported by the Office of the Director.

Jerry majored in Business at Sac State prior to beginning his career with Public Works in 1980.  Over the last 33 years he has served as the City Traffic Engineer, the Streets Manager, and in 2006 was appointed as Director of Transportation.  Jerry supports 408 full-time employees and manages an annual combined operating and capital improvement budget of over $100 million for the City of Sacramento.  In 2011, Jerry was named one of the Top-10 Public Works Leaders in North America by the American Public Works Association.
