The Rev. Steven D. Johnson, PhD is Co-Pastor of the Federated Church of Maine and an adjunct professor of Philosophy and Ethics at Broome Community College. He is a graduate of Eden Theological Seminary and received his Ph.D. in Theology from Drew University. 

 The Rev. Marian Shearer is Associate Conference Minister for Clergy and Authorized Ministry Concerns of the New York Conference. She is a graduate of Colgate Rochester Crozier Divinity School and has served on the staff of the New York Conference for over 10 years.

 This course will survey important events, people and ideas in American church history from colonial times through the first decade of the 21st century. Though students can expect to encounter materials from a wide range of religious perspectives there will be an emphasis on events, people, and ideas that have had a particular impact on the development of the United Church of Christ.

UCC History & Polity

This course surveys the historical and current documents that illuminate the breadth of theology that informs the United Church of Christ.  It provides an overview of the history of the UCC since 1957 and examines the covenantal structure of the church, the responsibilities and accountability of authorized ministers, worship, and vocation in the UCC. 

Saturdays:

Blended Course: Several Webconferenced meetings and 1 or 2 Face to Face Meetings     Students will be expected to have webcams (which can be purchased for $30 at stores like Target)

This course introduces students to the primary themes of Christian Theologyis to understand the history, theology, and pastoral elements of Christian Theology.  Students write papers or sermons that address the topics of Christology, the Doctrine of the Trinity, and the Purpose of the Church.

Face-to-face session:  Saturday, April 12  10:00am-3:30pm 

Webconferenced sessions: Wednesdays, April 23 and 30  6:30-8:45pm           

Webconferenced or face-to-face session: Saturday, May 3  9:00am-1:00pm    

 Webconferenced sessions: Wednesdays, May 7, 14 and 21  6:30pm-8:45pm

A non-refundable deposit of $25 must be received to process your registration. The balance of the course fee is due to the Conference by the second meeting of the class. If paying by check, please make it out to The New York Conference UCC.
