Family Dogs Can Bite: Safety Measures For Your Practice and Your Clients

The problem of dog bites presents a conundrum for the veterinary profession and for pet owners. We are a society of dog lovers, and treat them like members of the family, yet canine aggression is the most common problem presented to veterinary behaviorists. Understanding the behavioral basis of dog bites in the clinic and at home is an important step towards prevention. Veterinarians are an essential piece of this puzzle, with a unique opportunity to help staff and clients understand dog behavior and to prevent or lessen the risk of biting.

Guest Speaker: Ilana Reisner, DVM, PhD, DACVB
Dr. Ilana Reisner has been a board-certified veterinary behaviorist since the specialty of veterinary behavior was established in 1995. As a veterinary behaviorist, Dr. Reisner has expertise in both normal (though often undesirable) and abnormal behaviors of all companion animal species.Previously a member of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where she headed the Behavior Service at Penn's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Reisner provided clinical services to pet owners, served as mentor in a clinical residency program, and taught both clinical and undergraduate veterinary students. Dr. Reisner has published and spoken extensively on all aspects of behavior problems in dogs and cats and has an ongoing research interest in dog bites and public health.
