Ensuring the Safety & Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning Individuals

Health disparities for Chicago LGBTQ youth are strong and pervasive. Results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and two other studies report health disparities such as...depression, previous suicide attempts and self-injury.

(A Healthy Chicago for LGBT Youth: An IMPACT Program White Paper, Northwestern University 2012)

School districts across the country are in the process of examining and modifying their existing policies and practices to effectively address the legal and ethical issues concerning Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) populations. Some districts are known to undertake this important work only after unfavorable legal or media attention. In an effort to assist area school districts as they consider this sensitive and timely topic in their K-12 settings, NLU presents this seminar with outcomes that include:

  • Understand key issues that impede safety in the learning environment of LGBTQ students and those perceived as such
  • Identify tools that can be used to influence student behaviors to reduce bullying, counter prejudice and intervene in name calling
  • Knowledge about legal imperatives regarding LGBTQ students and staff
  • Information regarding how districts have successfully structured policies and practices to support the legal, ethical, and safety needs of LGBTQ populations.
