Due to the dynamic nature of the genetics field, it is challenging for health care providers to consistently incorporate new advancements into existing medical practice. Primary health care providers are in need of education that enables them to (a) appropriately identify personal and family cancer histories that indicate risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome; (b) gain an improved understanding of what hereditary cancer risk factors are; and (c) develop an awareness of tools and resources available to maximize the benefits of evidence-based, preventive cancer care for those with a genetic risk.

Conference Objectives:

  • Identify patients at risk for HBOC through the recognition of one family history red flags.
  • Organize the steps of cancer genetic counseling and testing and referral process for HBOC.
  • Explain the three possible test results of genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer.
  • Identify one agency that provides genetic testing and counseling guidelines.
  • Locate at least two appropriate resources for patients at risk for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome.
