SUMMER BREAK -Open Studio Meeting

  • September 6-7
  • October 4-5
  • November 1-2 

OPEN STUDIO MEETING – Two open studio periods will be scheduled, one in June and one in August. You are required to sign up for a 15-minute one-on-one with the instructors during one of these periods to receive input on your design. The 2 hour block will also be an opportunity to work on your design and cross-pollinate with fellow students.

2014 PDC Schedule

FORMAT: Classes are from 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM each day. Class time will consist of 90-minute sections of participatory exercises, design exercises/projects, tours, lectures, discussions,  presentations, planting demonstrations, and take-home resources.

CERTIFICATE: Attendance is essential.  There will be a 1-hour lunch break with two 15 minute morning and afternoon breaks.  No more than 1 full day can be missed to receive a certificate.

NOTE: Lunch WILL NOT be provided as part of your registration fee.  You are encouraged to bring your own brown bag lunch to each workshop session. Potluck lunches are organized for Sundays.

Rates & Details: 

Early bird registration is $1000 through March 21, 2014.  Registration fee is $1100 starting March 22, 2014. Fee includes course instruction and materials, site visits, guest speakers, certificate, beverages and snacks for 12 days and open studio support from instructors.

Refund Policy:  

A $150 deposit is required to hold your place in the course. The full balance is due by March 31, 2014. Payments are only 50% refundable with a $50 cancellation fee until March 31, 2014.  After the course begins, no refunds will be possible.

Edible Landscapes ~ Forests and Watersheds

In this twelve-day course over the span of eight months, you will dive deeply into the vision and practice of creating wholesome, dynamic, and resilient edible ecosystems using temperate deciduous forests as models.  The teaching team will offer lectures, site walks, and experiential exercises to help you understand how the architecture, social structures, and successional processes of natural forests apply in the design of edible ecosystems of all kinds.   We'll also learn about and practice water harvesting & storage options, biointensive gardening, reading patterns in natural systems, and understanding the cultural shifts required to transition in co-creating mindful communities of abundance.

Bios of Instructors 


Lincoln Smith runs Forested, a forest garden company in Bowie, MD (www.forested.us). He is passionate about production ecosystems, and brings a background in agronomic science and sustainable landscape design. He helps landowners in the eastern US create successful forest gardens through consultation and through training at the Forested demonstration garden. He is working on making and marketing acorn foods through collaboration with Korean acorn food producers. Lincoln spent five years designing and managing high-end residential landscape projects and pushing sustainability at Graham Landscape Architecture in Annapolis. He holds a Master of Arts in Landscape Design from the Conway School, a Permaculture Design Certificate from Wayne Weiseman, and earned LEED certification in 2008.

Kim Walsh has worked in the field of human rights, popular education, and on economic justice issues for the past 10 years prior to shifting her focus to permaculture, sustainable agriculture and building community through food. In 2009, she co-founded an organic farm business at Wild Meadows Farm in Bedford, PA, which practiced biointensive and permaculture principles. Kim also serves as a part-time Executive Director of Chesapeake Education, Arts and Research Society (CHEARS), an environmental non-profit based in Greenbelt, Maryland, where she assists with numerous volunteer driven projects including the Three Sisters Demonstration Gardens and Food Forest projects. She received her Permaculture Design Course (PDC) Certificate in 2008 and PDC teaching certificate in 2011. She co-organized and team taught three Permaculture Design Courses. She holds a BA in International Human Rights and completed an Accrediation Course in Organic Land Care and is currently a ToyotaTogetherGreen Fellow and participating in the Watershed Steward Academy working on mitigating stormwater runoff and pollution into the Anacostia River.

You will need the following list of tools throughout the course and to complete a final design project. Please bring these with you on the first weekend.
