Join Serve DC – The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by giving back.
On Monday, January 20, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., volunteers will be deployed to senior housing complexes across the District to spend time with residents and help them to create their own personal emergency preparedness plan.
Part of Mayor Gray's Age-Friendly DC Initiative, which aims to improve health and quality of life of older people in the District, this effort will help to ensure seniors know what to do – and not do – in the event of an emergency or disaster. Volunteers will provide a valuable service that helps to ensure our city's vulnerable populations are not overlooked in times of crisis and contributes toward improved community safety and the wellbeing and resilience of District seniors.
As the DC Commission on National and Community Service and the Mayor's Office on Volunteerism, Serve DC commemorates the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service each year by supporting and promoting service and civic engagement across the city. Serve DC connects residents with volunteer opportunities and community-based organizations with volunteers and tracks the number and locations of volunteers and service projects citywide.
