Feeding the World: Science, Energy and Agriculture

A workshop where questions are answered: How do we feed 9 billion people? How does production agriculture affect water quality? What is the value of corn production? Why biofuels? How can ag biotechnology contribute to food security? Soil and Sustainability: what is the link? Participants will see demonstration plots, talk to experts and practice a variety of labs related to water, soil and plant science. Each participate will receive over $300 worth of classroom science materials. Ashland graduate credit is available with on-site registration. All expenses are paid including materials, food, one-night shared hotel room. Sponsored by the Ohio Corn Marketing Program. Schedule of events (subject to change): 

Day 1 - Lessons and Labs

  • Explore corn: Leaf collar method of determining vegetative state, growing degree days, corn field math
  • Water quality: Chemical tests, biotic sampling
  • Soil and sustainability: Texture labtivity, nutrient contents, lawn chemicals
  • Energy and Ethanol: Sugars and fermentation, cellulosic ethanol, feedstocks and sugars
  • Biotechnology: Punnett squares, genetic modification using a model, pGLO plasmid lab
  • Feeding the world: Global food simulation, gapminder math

Dinner  & "Speed Dating" with Agriculture Industry Experts

Day 2 - Lessons, Field Work, Field Trip

  • Field tests and yield predictions in demonstration plots with agronomist 
  • Feeding the World; Codex GMO simulation with representatives from Columbus Council on World Affairs
  • Field Trip to Valero Ethanol Plant
