Biography of the Bible

Feb 16: The first scriptures of the earliest Christians
Mar 02: Meanings of 'sacred', 'scripture' and 'inspired'
Mar 16: Canons, councils and catalogues
Apr 06: The Authority of the Bible

The Bible is the most important document in Christianity. It forms the basis for every teaching and doctrine of the Church. But have you ever wondered how the Bible came to be? How did independent stories and accounts of past events come to be written down, collected, selected, edited and eventually accepted by various traditions of the Church as Holy Scripture? Join us in this 7-week course of four 3-hour classes, where we will read Oxford University Professor John Barton's book, People of the Book?: The Authority of the Bible in Christianity. He spent much of his academic career investigating the canonization of the Bible. Dr. Ron Choong will lead the seminar and offer his own notes and personal insights from a decade's worth of studying the origin of the Bible.

You may take this course live in New York or as an on-line student anywhere in the world, as everyone is expected to participate in the on-line forum.
