Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour public education program that introduces non-healthcare professionals to information that will help identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and chemical dependency disorders. Training is offered on the following:
Just as CPR and first aid are intended to help an injured person before proper medical treatment can be provided and are performed by a non-medical professional, Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach the public key skills to help someone developing a mental health problem or crisis.
Participants who complete the 8-hour certification course learn a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
