Nancy Mohrbacher, IBCLC, FILCA is author or coauthor of several breastfeeding books, including Breastfeeding Answers Made Simple, Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers (with Kathleen Kendall-Tackett), and Breastfeeding Solutions.  Her Breastfeeding Solutions app for smartphones and tablets debuted in October 2013. She has been helping breastfeeding families since 1982. Board-certified as a lactation consultant in 1991, she ran a large private lactation practice in the Chicago area from 1993 to 2003. In 2008 Nancy was in the first group of 16 to be awarded the designation Fellow of the International Lactation Consultant Association (FILCA) for her lifetime achievements in breastfeeding.

Katherine Bacon Schneider, Ph.D., NMC-BC earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and taught at the university level for five years after graduation.  Currently a Nursing Mothers’ Counselor (and former La Leche League Leader) with the Lexington chapter of NMC, Kate is also the mother of two children--one breastfed and one for whom she exclusively pumped for 26 months.

Monday, March 24, 2014,  7:30am - 4:30pm

10:00 - 10:30 am Break, Exhibitors, Silent Auction

10:30am - 12:00pm Session 2: Morning Breakouts (Choice of one)

Breakout 2A. Working and Breastfeeding Made Simple
Nancy Mohrbacher, IBCLC, FILCA

Learn the strategies that can help an employed mother structure daily routines, calculate a baby's milk needs, and troubleshoot milk production issues using the Magic Number concept to more easily meet her long-term breastfeeding goals.

Breakout 2B. Maternal Obesity: Assumptions and Realities
Morgan Kennedy Henderson, IBCLC, NMC-BC

What do we really know about how obesity impacts a mother's ability to breastfeed, and what do we assume?  For those who provide phone counseling, are there assumptions made about the size of the mother on the other end of the phone?  Come away with an understanding of how obesity may or may not impact breastfeeding, and with tools to support nursing dyads in this context. Early postpartum issues such as positioning and delayed lactogenesis will be addressed

12:00-1:00 pm Lunch, Exhibitors, Silent Auction

1:00 - 2:30 pm Session 3: Afternoon Breakouts (Choice of one)

Breakout 3A. Exclusive Pumping: Moms in the Middle

Katherine Bacon Schneider, Ph.D., NMC-BC
Whether by circumstance or by choice, a small but growing number of women are primarily expressing their breast milk and bottle-feeding rather than feeding directly at the breast. This
session will explore the reasons why women are exclusively pumping, and the emotions felt by

these “moms in the middle,” who are neither breastfeeding nor formula feeding. This session will also cover reaching full milk supply with a pump and practical tips from experienced exclusive-pumping mothers.

Breakout 3B. It takes a Village: Hospital and Community Breastfeeding Supporters Working Together
Jessica Lang Kosa, Ph.D., IBCLC

Working toward the Healthy People 2020 goals for breastfeeding entails supporting mothers from the
immediate postpartum period through the entire first year.  One common pitfall is lack of continuity of care. Baby-Friendly Step 10 recognizes that connecting mothers with resources for breastfeeding help in the community is critical to the success of breastfeeding. This session will address what types of help are useful
for breastfeeding families, including the specific resources available in Massachusetts and online, and the
steps that both hospital- and community-based breastfeeding providers can take to promote better connection and access for new parents.

2:30-3:00pm Break, Exhibitors, Silent Auction

3:00-4:30pm Session 4: Assessing Breast and Nipple Pain
Nancy Mohrbacher, IBCLC, FILCA
More than 75% of mothers report nipple pain during the early weeks of breastfeeding. This talk reviews its causes, comfort measures, and the treatments that speed healing, reduce pain, and prevent infection. It also includes likely and unlikely causes of breast pain, an overview of effective treatments, and the controversy over the existence of ductal candidiasis, or breast pain caused by an overgrowth of yeast inside the breasts.
