What, if anything, has gone wrong with democracy?
The idea is not a left vs right debate but how we become better citizens. Your thoughts?

Abstract: The Economic crisis in Europe has caused widespread social unrest and there is concern that when citizens elect a new European parliament this spring turnout will be low and in many countries they will return parties of the far right. Meanwhile in the US there seems to be a breakdown in political consensus. Is there something amiss?

Join us for lunch and an enlightening discussion. Meet our panelists:

Celeste Montoya, Associate Professor of Women's Studies
Celeste Montoya received her PhD in Political Science and a Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Washington University in St. Louis. She joined the Women and Gender Studies Program at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2007. Professor Montoya's research primarily focuses on the ways in which women and other marginalized groups mobilize to enact change.     

  

Matthew Appelbaum, Mayor of the City of Boulder
Matt has been the Mayor of the City of Boulder since 2011 and on the on the Boulder City Council since 2007. He has been involved in civic activities for three decades, serving on a wide variety of city boards and committees that advised the council on such issues as transportation, budgeting and revenues, affordable housing, and parks and recreation.

Barbara Miller, Executive Director of Center of Education in Law and
Democracy (CELD) Barbara received her B.A. in American History and Secondary Education from Simpson College, where she now serves as a Trustee; she earned an M.A. in American history at Mankato State University.  Since founding CELD in 2002, she and her colleagues have provided materials and opportunities that enhance civic learning for both teachers and students.   


Andrew Shoemaker, City Council Member and CoFounder of Shoemaker Ghiselli + Schwartz LLC
Andrew graduated  summa cum laude from Hampden-Sydney College with B.A. degrees in economics and political science. In 1992 he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law. He has twenty years handling lawsuits and government investigations as a federal prosecutor and a partner at an international law firm. Andrew has been on the City of Boulder's Planning Board for five years where he served as Board Chair and representative to the Greenways Advisory Committee. He was elected to the Boulder City Council in November 2013.
