CLERC PD Workshop Series 2014:

Preparing Students for the Advanced Level Language and Culture Course

In this four session series of the Chinese Language and Culture Webinar course, participants will become familiar with the advanced level language and culture content required to prepare students for college entrance or placement exams. Participants will review traditional and contemporary culture topics, and learn how to plan and implement a course that integrates culture content knowledge, language skills, and critical thinking skills. They will also discuss ideas on how to best develop student's language proficiency across the three modes of communication-interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. The purpose of this webinar course is to provide teachers with effective strategies for each of these modes of communication, which will thoroughly preparing students for higher level language proficiency and their future academic pursuits. 

This Chinese language teachers’ professional development opportunity is hosted by the Chinese Language Education & Research Center (CLERC). There are a total of 4 sessions, please see the schedule on left column for details.  You can participant in this workshop series either onsite or online. Training certificates will be issued to those attendees who successfully complete the entire workshop series:1) 4 full attendance, 2) one time payment,  3) complete assingments if applicable.

Lesson One: What Entails  an Advanced Level Course (AP, IB, 21st Century           Skills, Common Core of State Standards)                                                             Time: Saturday 2:00-4:00pm, Feb. 8, 2014 (PST)                                            

Registration deadline: Feb.4th, 2014 or when it is full. We do NOT accept late registration.      

Registration Fee: a one_time payment of $20 for all 4 sessions is required for registration. If you need a certificate, $5 more processing fee will be added. Both are NOT refundable.

Lead Instructors: Yu-Lan Lin & Liping Ma 

 Dr. Yu-Lan Lin has been a teacher/administrator for 34 years,recently  retired from the Boston Public Schools as th Senior Program Director  of World Languages. She is currently the Executive Director of CLASS.  In 2004, Dr. Lin was selected to serve on the Chinese AP Task Force  Committee for the College Board, and in 2005, she served as the  Content Advisor for the AP Chinese Program. From 2008-2012, she was appointed to serve on the AP Chinese Curriculum and Assessment Development Committee. Currently she is serving on the World Language Advisory Committee and the Academy Assembly Committee for the College Board. Her published work includes co-authorship of the CLASS Professional Standards for K-12 Chinese Teachers.  She is the recipient of MaFLA's Distinguished Service Award, NECTFL's Nelson H. Brooks Award and ACTFL's Florence Steiner Award.

 Liping MaDr. Liping Ma is the founder of the Stanford Chinese School (a weekend heritage school) in Palo Alto, CA. In the past few years, more than 80 students in the Stanford Chinese School took the AP Chinese test each year, and all the students have received full scores. Liping Ma guided her team to develop her school’s AP Chinese curriculum and she has personally taught the AP Chinese classes in Stanford Chinese School for several years. She is the author of the popular Chinese Textbook series, Ma Liping Chinese.
