Consuming Kids:  How Excessive Commercialism is Harming Children

No generation in history has grown up in such a commercial environment.

From corporate sponsored teaching materials in the classroom to branded slumber parties at home, advertising messages are ubiquitous in the lives of children today. Even school buses may be turned into traveling billboards.

The commercialization of childhood is linked to a host of public health and social problems for children…..childhood obesity, sexualization, delayed language acquisition, shortened attention spans, and the erosion of creative play, to name just a few.

Indeed, some believe that childhood itself is under siege.

Psychologist and Harvard Medical School Instructor, Susan Linn, a leading expert on the impact of media and marketing on children, will provide an in depth look at the magnitude of this problem and explore avenues for positive change at this educational webinar (1.5 PDUs):

Marketing to children—even babies—is a big business today.  But psychologists, educators, and parents are now paying closer attention to the effects of this excessive exposure on the health and well-being of infants and young children up to age 12.

What’s at risk is no less than development of essential life skills—including capacities for creative play and self-soothing when stressed.

In fact, research links infant screen time to sleep disturbances and delayed language acquisition, as well as problems in later childhood such as poor school performance and childhood obesity. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under two.  There is no evidence that babies learn anything by watching videos—let alone how to read, as recent video products are claiming.

Learn the facts and what you can do to mitigate the effects of this growing public health problem. In this 90-minute program including Q&A, you will take away:

  • A detailed understanding of the pervasiveness of commercialism in children’s lives
  • A comprehensive review of the harms of commercializing childhoods
  • Strategies for limiting commercial access to children
  • Concrete examples of the negative behaviors and values being promoted
  • Shocking statistics on average screen time of babies and children through age 12
  • Purely fact-based information and review of the latest studies on child research

Plus, Dr. Linn will leave you with plenty of tools and resources to explore this topic further and to advocate for commercial-free zones.
