About the Event

 

Conference Goal
To increase the participants' knowledge of the incidence and implications of pediatric obesity and Type II Diabetes and to provide evidence-based strategies for patient and family education and support.

 

Objectives
As a result of attending this continuing nursing education program, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the prevalence and incidence of obesity 
  • Explain the need for a multifaceted approach to prevent and treat obesity
  • Identify and describe health implications of pediatric obesity
  • Recognize the social and financial implications of pediatric obesity
  • Differentiate between Type I and Type II Diabetes
  • List three ways to prevent Type II Diabetes in children
  • Describe how to assess and identify obesity in children
  • Discuss treatment options available through lifestyle modifications
  • Describe two ways to educate families on nutrient needs and behavior changes for a positive outcome
  • Discuss the value and importance of mindful eating to prevent obesity in the pediatric population
  • Describe two ways a child can eat mindfully
  • Describe and recognize the proper exercise prescription for youth fitness
  • Recognize adequate policies, proceedures and staffing for successful youth fitness programming
  • Discuss ways to utilize evidence based interventions and strategies to encourage youth fitness
  • Identify a range of emotional responses to family dynamics at mealtime
  • Discuss how past family meals influence future food choices
  • Examine how a parent’s conditioned behaviors about meals play a role  in food selection for children
  • Recognize the school nurse’s role in advocating for policy change to increase awareness of childhood obesity.
  • Describe the management of Diabetes in the school setting and school-related activities.
  • Discuss evidence based school programs to promote healthy lifestyles.
