FPA of Silicon Valley May 2014 Luncheon Meeting

International Clients & Silicon Valley Financial Advisors: Challenges & Opportunities

Moderator: Ariadne Horstman, Private Client Specialist, Sensiba San Filippo Financial Advisors, LLC

Panelists: Dean Smith, Senior Tax Manager, Sensiba San Filippo LLP; Barbara Nesbet, Attorney, The Law office of Barbara Nesbet; Nancy Starr, Owner and Financial Advisor, Starr Capital LLC

Meeting Description

Geography doesn’t limit investing – or financial planning-- and that’s especially true in the Bay Area. Many Silicon Valley financial advisers serve clients with financial and family ties to other countries, including those who were previously living in another country or are now living abroad, who are non-US citizens or married to a non-citizen spouse, or who have other global obligations and investments. In fact, there are so many varied international situations in the Bay Area that it is hard to find families and individuals that will not encounter global financial issues at some point, if they have not already.

Most international conundrums  fall into the tax and estate planning areas, but it’s essential that advisers be aware of them to avoid common pitfalls for their clients, as well as liability for themselves.

This panel discussion will offer you the highlights of what you need to know. The session will cover some of the more common topics that arise in comprehensive financial planning for a client with a global footprint.  Using specific examples, the panelists will provide a high level overview of some of the legal, tax and personal/cultural ramifications with information on resources for additional in depth education.

1.5 hours CE available pending approval by the CFP Board.
