Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon Presents:

The 2014 Child Hunger Prevention Roadshow!!

Don't miss this year's keynote address from U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici. Serving Oregon's 1st District, Representative Bonamici is a great champion of our work and a tireless advocate for protecting Oregon's children.

Join us for a day of workshops and networking to learn more about how to feed Oregon’s kids during summers and after school. All are welcome to attend!

Workshop offerings will include:

A.     Healthy Students are Better Students: Nutrition Throughout the Year

Presenter: Crista Hawkins, Oregon Dairy Council

Presenter: Cinthia Hiatt-Henry, McMinnville School District

Presenter: Brenda Jensen, Woodburn Afterschool Program

Presenter: Heidi DuPuis, Oregon Department of Education

This interactive session will review the Wellness Impact Report and learning connections to help Oregon students be healthy students and better students.  Youth meal programs, in school and out of school,                in Oregon play important roles in student wellness.  The session will provide resources, examples and      support for in-school, afterschool and summer meals.

Participants will learn of the resources and research to support in-school and out-of-school nutrition and be able to identify nutrition activities that can be used in a summer or afterschool program environment.

B.   SL3: Summer Learning, Summer Library, Summer Lunch

Presenter: Susan Hamann, Oregon Afterschool for Kids

Summer presents special challenges to young people’s health and learning.  We will discuss the challenges as well as how afterschool & summer programs and advocates are addressing them using a range of community resources.  Come learn about the SL3 initiative and be prepared to discuss new perspectives and strategies.

Participants will gain a greater understanding of the summer learning loss and the need for summer programs that feed the body and brain.

C.  Afterschool Meals and Snacks: Models of Success

Presenter: Barbara Pearson, South Side Youth Outreach                                                                 Presenter: Kent Klewitz, Jefferson School District                                                                            Presenter: Vickie Hartel, Salem-Keizer School District

Grants are available right now to help sponsors start and expand afterschool meal and snack programs across the state. Whether you work for a school district, non-profit, or faith-based organization, if your goal is to provide nutritious meals to children in the after-school hours, this workshop will be a great resource to get you started

Our panelists will share the unique program models that have allowed them to gain greater program sustainability while expanding access to reach more children in their communities.

D.  No Kid Hungry in the Summertime: Marketing Your Program

Presenters: Sam Read and Tali Caiazza, Share our Strength

This session is designed to provide organizations with best practices for marketing summer meal programs to various audiences, including low-income families, potential/existing partners and advocates, and the media. Both digital and traditional strategic communications tactics will be highlighted, as well as out-of-the-box ideas to maximize awareness to the largest audience.

E.  Celebrate Summer Meals: A Toolkit

Presenter: Lesley Nelson, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon                                                                 Presenter: Rose Walker, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon

Come explore the many ways that hosting a Summer Meals Celebration can boost your participation and build community partnerships. The Child Hunger Prevention Team at PHFO has developed a step-by-step tool kit that will make coordinating a celebration simple and fun. Plus, we’ll be revealing a new, easy-to-use, electronic tool for advertising your event in the media.

F. Fundraising to Feed Kids: Write Great Grants and Make Asking Easy!

Presenter: Annie Kirschner, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon

In addition to getting tips for success and your questions answered, you’ll leave with a list of grants and a sample of a strong grant application. Participants will also work together to develop a list of immediate needs that could be met by local businesses and organizations (such as activity supplies or printing), and identify 3 groups to approach for donations.  Working from a sample script, we will practice (in a safe place!) making our pitch. And last but not least we will share creative ways to thank donors to ensure they look forward to supporting your work year after year.

G.  Writing the Grant: Direct Application Assistance for Summer & Afterschool Meal Programs                       (Mattie’s Room 3)

PHFO’s Development Director and Child Hunger Prevention staff will be providing hands-on assistance to help sponsors translate program goals to clear, concise, and fundable requests. This workshop will focus specifically on application packets for PHFO’s Summer Meal Grants and ODE’s Summer & Afterschool Meal & Snack Grants.
