Plenary Speakers

Internationally recognized leader and activist Ruchira Gupta is the Founder and President of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, a grassroots organization in India working to end sex trafficking by increasing choices for at-risk girls and women. In 2009 Ruchira won the Clinton Global Citizen Award, and in 2007 won the Abolitionist Award at the UK House of Lords. In 2008 and 2009, Ruchira addressed the UN General Assembly on human trafficking. In addition to her activist work, Ruchira edited and wrote the introduction for As If Women Mattered: The Essential Gloria Steinem Reader and has worked extensively with Ms. Steinem. She also won an Emmy for her work on the documentary The Selling of Innocents, which inspired the creation of Apne Aap. Her work has been featured in eleven books, including Half the Sky by Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristof.

Katya Fels Smyth is Founder and CEO of the Full Frame Initiative, a fresh approach to breaking cycles of poverty and violence. Katya has over two decades of experience working with systems to design and implement responses to people when poverty, violence and trauma collide. A recipient of several social entrepreneurship awards and fellowships, Katya speaks, publishes, and provides consultation nationally. She is a Research Affiliate with MIT’s Community Innovators Lab (Co-Lab) and was a Research Fellow at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She is a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council to Address Sexual and Domestic Violence. Katya holds an AB with honors in Biology from Harvard and received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School.

Connie Burk co-founded the first regional LGBT survivor services in Kansas over twenty years ago. Since 1997, she has directed The Northwest Network of Bisexual, Trans, Lesbian and Gay Survivors of Abuse in Seattle, where she established the National LGBT Training & Technical Assistance Initiative and founded the National Q&A Institute. Connie trains internationally on community engagement, domestic abuse and prevention strategies, and taking the “crisis” out of crisis response organizations. Her work in the LGBT community developed her expertise in assessment, survivors’ use of violence, working with survivors’ friends and families, working with men, and community engagement strategies. She has focused particular attention on strengthening alliances among marginalized communities while centering liberation values in her work. She is the co-author of Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others.

Heather Corinna is an activist, artist, and community organizer. Her extraordinary website Scarleteen brings inclusive, feminist, creative, and comprehensive sexuality content to an audience of two million visitors each year. Heather is the author of S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and College. A graduate with honors of Chicago's Academy for the Arts, where she studied music and creative writing, she won a National Academy of Poets award in her teens. She continued her education at Shimer College, studying literature, erotic spirituality and sociology, then later studied at the Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center. In addition, she is trained as a facilitator for Teen Talking Circles.

This year's conference will be held at the Hilton Vancouver hotel in Vancouver, Washington.

Meals

Lunch will be provided Monday and Tuesday; breakfast will be provided Tuesday and Wednesday. As always, we will do our best to accommodate any dietary restrictions.
