Program Description:
As clients age some may begin to experience diminishing capacity to handle their financial affairs.  This program is designed to give the audience a deeper understanding of how to recognize cognitive changes in clients and when it is time to begin the transition to working with family members and/or trustees.  The program will also provide practical solutions to helping clients prepare early for the possibility that they may no longer be able to manage their financial affairs.  There will be in-depth discussion of the legal and fiduciary aspects of working with clients with diminishing capacity as well as working with custodians and financial institutions.

Chris Edgerly will discuss the warning signs in clients of diminishing capacity and the various manifestations of dementia and other cognitive disabilities.  She will also touch on the stages of cognitive decline and knowing when a client can no longer handle their financial affairs.  She will suggest resources available to advisors and clients.

Peter Myers will discuss ways to prepare for client cognitive decline which protect both the financial advisory firm and the client.  He will address such topics as the length of time the firm can reasonably work with the client, the do’s and don’ts from a legal/fiduciary standpoint, essential forms and documents (beyond the basics of wills and trusts) to have in place to ensure a smooth transition to successor trustees and POAs, how to work through problem situations such as poorly drafted documents, and how best to work with custodians and financial institutions.

Speaker Bios:
Elizabeth Edgerly, Ph.D.
She is a clinical psychologist and serves as Chief Program Officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, Northern California & Northern Nevada.  Dr. Edgerly joined the Alzheimer’s Association in 1995 and oversees all chapter programs for persons with dementia, their families and professionals.  She is an active presenter and spokesperson for the Alzheimer's Association and has appeared on television, radio and in numerous national and local publications, speaking on topics related to brain health, caregiving and Alzheimer’s.  She serves on numerous national and local advisory councils.  In May 2013, Dr. Edgerly was named Woman of the Year by the Women Health Care Executives of the San Francisco Bay Area for her work to improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their families.

Peter S. Myers, Esq.
A lecturer, author and Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Peter Myers is a name partner of Myers Urbatsch P.C.  He has been named a California “SuperLawyer” by San Francisco and Law & Politics Magazine since 2004 and was named a “Top100” attorney in the U.S. by Worth Magazine and The Robb Report for two years in a row. Peter Myers was graduated from Hastings College of Law in 1984 after receiving his B.A. from American University.  Mr. Myers has served on a number of Boards of Directors for local charities and was adjunct professor at Golden Gate University.  He serves as an expert witness and mediator in trusts and estates law.  The firm handles difficult and/or complex matters such as high-net-worth succession planning, and complex intrafamily dynamics.
