Facilitator Training: Text Complexity and Close Reading for Common Core English Language Arts

Monday, June 30 -to- Wednesday, July 2, 2014
Denver, Colorado
8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Text complexity and close reading play central roles in the Common Core. Specifically, the English language arts (ELA) standards “hinge on students encountering appropriately complex texts at each grade level in order to develop the mature language skills and the conceptual knowledge they need for success in school and life” (CCSSI). But how can teachers and leaders measure text complexity?  What strategies should students use to read complex texts? This workshop will help you to address these questions.

First, participants will increase their understanding of the central role of text complexity and how close reading of complex texts can foster student gains in reading proficiency. Second, participants will explore ways to measure text complexity. Third, participants will practice strategies for close reading of complex texts using step-by-step guidance for explicit teaching of reading in the content areas. Participants will also receive:

  • McREL’s templates for measuring text complexity
  • A format for measuring text complexity with teaching teams
  • Strategies for close reading across grade levels
  • Step-by-step guidelines for strategic teaching of close reading

Upon successful completion of this training, you will be licensed to deliver this workshop to educators within your district or service area and retain 100% of tuition fees for all trainings you deliver.
