Safe Routes to School: Policy, Funding, and Resources for Ohio Communities

Overview:

Research studies show that Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are effective at improving student safety, health, and concentration at school, and improving community connectivity for walking and biking.  Ohio's SRTS programs assist communities, schools, and advocates with developing and implementing projects and programs that encourage and enable children in grades K-8 to walk or bike to school safely.  This workshop will be valuable in educating stakeholders in multiple community sectors, including health, transportation, regional planning, education, advocacy and economic development, about the impact of SRTS, policy adoption, program implementation, best practices, funding, guidance, and educational resources.

This workshop will address:

  • health, safety, education, transportation and community benefits of SRTS policies and programs,
  • implementation methods, funding, and resources to increase physical activity through SRTS policy, implementation and education,
  • SRTS tools and resources available to improve access to physical activity, and
  • information on how to use the County Health Rankings tools to guide your work.

Agenda & Registration:

The workshop will be held from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm on May 15th at the Ohio Department of Transportation, 1980 West Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43223.  On-site registration will begin at 9:00 am. Cost is $20 and includes boxed lunch and all workshop materials.  Space is limited and registration is required. The deadline to register is Friday, May 9th. Refunds will not be honored after the deadline, however, substitutions are welcome.

Who Should Attend:

Those working in transportation, education (school administrators and board members), hospitals, public health, parks and recreation, faith based organizations, economic development, advocacy, and others interested in learning more about SRTS.
