Family Learning Enrichment

A fun learning experience for Ohio families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing

What is Family Learning Enrichment?
Family Learning Enrichment (FLE) is intended to give parents of children with a hearing loss useful information regarding their child’s education and the opportunity to network with other families.

Workshop topics are centered around parenting, communication, education and resources for families with a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. Childcare for children age 3 months to 14 years includes kid-friendly activities for both children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their siblings.

The Parents' Program

Guiding Your Child's Education

While the children are enjoying the zoo exhibits, parents will attend a workshop geared towards their needs as parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The workshop presentations will be about the following topics:

"What Parents Should Know About the IEP Process"
Presented by Joe Farry

Joe will review with parents the 15 sections of the IEP, the required documentation for each section, the components necessary for making meaningful annual IEP goals, and identifying the required members of the IEP team along with their roles. Parents will leave the presentation with a better understanding of what makes up the IEP and how they fit into the process

 "In the Driver's Seat"
Presented by Darlene Zangara

Today's parenting can be challenging. Add the complexities of parenting a child with a hearing loss and it can be overwhelming, to say the least. Darlene will help parents explore and identify different tools to help them decide what is best for the family, while teaching them how to parent and advocate for their student with confidence.

"Student Rights and Organizing Records"
Presented by Carolynn Head

Carolynn will discuss the rights parents have under IDEA 2004 and teach parents how to organize records and documentation that pertains to their child's education and health needs.

The Children's Program

Children age 3 months to 14 years will visit various zoo exhibits and participate in group activities while their parents attend the workshop. The children will be supervised by Ohio School for the Deaf childcare providers in two groups: the preschool group and the school-age group.

Preschool Group (3 months old through Pre-K)

Children in this group will stay in the Activity Pavilion near the parent workshop. The preschool group will participate in preschool-appropriate activities and visit the zoo exhibits closest to the pavilion. One special exhibit, Show and Tell with Zoo Animals, will visit the children at the pavilion. Childcare is provided by the Ohio School for the Deaf childcare staff.

Naptime is provided for this group after lunch. KinderCots are available for your toddler/preschooler. Parents are responsible to lay their child down for naptime and stay with them until childcare staff return from lunch.

School-Age Group (5 to 14 years old)

Children in this group will visit many of the zoo exhibits throughout the day. The school-age group is divided into two smaller groups based on grade level for safety reasons and age-appropriate activities. Childcare is provided by the Ohio School for the Deaf childcare staff.

Registration Fee

The registration fee for each family is based on the number of members attending FLE. There are two fee rates, one for adults and one for children up to age 14. FLE does not include children older than 14.

  • $25 per adult
  • $10 per child (ages 2-14)

For example, if your family includes two adults and two school-age children, your registration fee is $70.

 No refunds will be given.
