Animal Hero Service Leaning Training Class:
Preparing Students and Youth Groups to Help Oahu's Animals
This is a required class for those wanting to help the Hawaiian Humane Society for a school or club project or to earn volunteer & service hours.
Class highlights
- Animal Welfare 101 - Gain knowledge on key issues facing Oahu's companion animals.
- Service Learning in Your Community - Learn about service projects that you can do in your community.
- Shelter tour and photo opportunities - See first hand what it takes to manage the nearly 28,000 animals that enter our shelter doors each year. Includes an overview of the Society's role, responsibilities and needs. An overview of shelter photography rules are included in the tour.
- Mock press conference - Students will capture interview footage to use for their project. This will be the only interview opportunity given to students who are working on service learning projects.

Presenter: Bonnie Oda
Bonnie develops broad reach and targeted initiatives for youth education, with a focus on middle and high schools where animals may be at risk. She has established partnerships with All Stars After School, Boys & Girls Club, Kamaaina Kids, as well as schools and communities where the education needs are the greatest. Bonnie is currently a member of the Hawaii Education Association and her professional experience before joining the Society in 2010 encompassed decades of education and marketing work including ownership of several educator and children's training franchises and multiple marketing and development positions.
