Intro to Ashtanga Mysore style with Leigha Nicole

Cost: $75
June 14 and 15  Saturday and Sunday 1 - 3:30 pm  Studio C, Berkeley Yoga Center

Ashtanga Yoga taught in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is a deeply transformative system of yoga.  Different sequences of postures (asana) are linked together with the fluid movements of the sun salutations (surya namaskar). These are practiced with a
meditative rhythmic breath technique (ujjayi pranayama) along with the cultivation of deep core strength (bandhas).

The most personal and individualized way to practice Ashtanga Yoga is in an environment called "Mysore style" classes.  This workshop will focus on this particular format and prepare students to attend a Mysore Ashtanga class with a solid primary series foundation.  Upon completion of this workshop, special discounts will be offered for the Mysore classes at Berkeley Yoga Center.

Adjustments, Alignment, and Anatomy

Cost: $90
June 28 and 29, Saturday and Sunday 1 - 4 pm  Studio C, Berkeley Yoga Center

This 2 day workshop will explore the fine art of hands-on adjusting and specific techniques for working safely and intelligently with students practicing yoga poses in a class or one-on-one setting. Technical inquiry will include working with and adjusting different body types, principles of anatomy, and reviewing alignment and energy movement in the asanas.

The core poses of the Ashtanga Primary Series will be the basis for partner work and group discussion. This workshop is offered as continuing education for yoga teachers as well as students who wish to deepen their practice.

LEIGHA NICOLE has been teaching yoga for 29 years and taught at Yoga Works in Santa Monica, CA from its inception in 1987.  Her love of Ashtanga Yoga brought her to India 23 years ago to study extensively with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and was authorized to teach by him in 1996.  Leigha has a gentle approach and encourages students to embrace the contemplative aspect of the practice with attention to alignment and the cultivation of awarness.  She has an intimate knowledge of anatomy that stems from a 27 year bodywork practice which enables her to address the specific therapeutic needs of her students.  Leigha moved from Point Reyes, CA to the spiritual town of Crestone, CO in 2005, where she built a straw bale solar home and yoga studio.  She regularly returns to the Bay Area for group classes and workshops.
