Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Stokes County

Thursday, April 10, 2014

4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Please join us on April 10th to:

1) learn more about the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Stokes County and

2) share your views about how to complete the trail and help residents and visitors use it to enjoy the beauty of Stokes.

This focus group is part of a county-wide planning process called Stokes 2035 that is providing Stokes County, King, Danbury and Walnut Cove with strategic guidance on issues including recreation, environment, land use and economic development.

Issues to be discussed on April 10 include:

  • Western Stokes: The MST follows the 22-mile Sauratown Trail between Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock state parks.  Key links in this unique trail system have been lost in recent years as land changes hands. How can we ensure that the Sauratown Trail remains a vital part of the MST and Stokes County's recreational amenities?
  • Central Stokes: MST hikers walk on the road for two miles from the main gate of Hanging Rock State Park to Danbury. How can we improve the route between the park and town and then make a route through town into Moratock Park that helps people enjoy the beauty, businesses, and history of Danbury.
  • Eastern Stokes: Where does the MST go after it leaves Moratock Park? The trail has been envisioned to follow the Dan River toward Belew's Lake. Until trail is built, the trail follows back roads. Can we make the current road route more enjoyable for hikers and bikers? How do we build an off-road route that highlights this special part of the county?
  • Economic Benefit: How can we help local businesses and communities benefit economically from the trail? MST hikers need places to stay, food, supplies and shuttle services. Use of the trail will increase if these services are easy for MST hikers to locate.
  • What issue are you interested in?  If yours isn't on the list above, please share what's on your mind on April 10th!
