NCSU/TISS ESI Kyle Beardsley - Nuclear Weapons Programs and the Security Dilemma

Join us on the third Wednesday of every month for a discussion of energy and security.  The luncheon series will be led primarily by local scholars. Its goal is to foster interdisciplinary exploration of some of our most pressing challenges.  On April 16th,  Kyle Beardlsey, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Duke University, will discuss nuclear weapons programs and the security dilemma. Policy applications are discussed with regard to the so-called nuclear renaissance that involves the potential spread and expansion of civilian nuclear energy programs.

Format:  Light Luncheon from 11:45am / Presentation from noon.  Discussion from 12:30 pm. Please let us know you are coming by the close of business day on the Friday before the event so that we can get an accurate luncheon count.

A rich literature has considered the security implications of the acquisition of nuclear weapons, but less is known about the implications of the mere seeking of nuclear weapons. This talk addresses how nuclear-weapons programs are a source of instability and cause of international crises, while the attainment of nuclear weapons tends to be a source of stability. Policy applications are discussed with regard to the so-called nuclear renaissance that involves the potential spread and expansion of civilian nuclear energy programs.
