As opioid use and overdose is on the rise in our State, it is imperative to use every tool available to address the crisis. Over the past decade the treatment of substance use disorders has entered into a new phase in which medications can play a vital role in helping individuals treat and recover from their addiction.

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of pharmacological medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a ‘whole patient' approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. This education forum will discuss how new advancements in pharmacotherapy can help support and augment traditional evidence-based treatment practices for opioid dependence and provide participants with greater understanding of the physiology of addiction and the use MAT.

 Participants will gain valuable updates on the biology of opioids and the clinical use of familiar and newer medications including extended release Naltrexone, Buprenorphine, and Methadone.

Topics include:

  • Monitoring methods and interpretation of test results in patients taking these ;
  • Mechanism and clinical use of extended release naltrexone;
  • Comparison of relapse prevention medications for opioid addiction - pros and cons and patient matching strategies;
  • Evidence for effectiveness; and
  • Special populations - pregnant women, adolescents and young adults, patients with co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
