CLINICIAN BIOS

DR. KIRBY SHAW  - Kirby has made a major impact in choral music education and has shared his musical expertise in 45 states, Canada, Australia, the Bahamas, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Germany. Kirby has degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and a DMA degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. Dr. Shaw's teaching is infused with a sense of humor and breadth of knowledge that is transmitted in an exciting and highly contagious manner. A composer/arranger with nearly 3000 choral compositions/arrangements in print, Kirby's music is sung around the world and has sold over 20 million copies. He has many commissioned pieces to his credit, including The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and ACOUSTIX.

MCH MARGARET CAMPBELLE-HOLMAN - Our other guest clinician for this event will be Margaret Campbelle-Holman, Executive Director of Choral Arts Link. This inspiring educator, author, composer and music education consultant has been impacting the lives of of others for over 30 years. Her guidance as artistic director includes providing choral arts mentoring for music educators, pre-service music education majors and choral performance training for upper elementary, middle and high school singers. Organizations she has touched with her many gifts include the Chicago Symphony, Chicago Public Schools, Metro Nashville Public Schools, The Nashville Symphony, McGraw Hill Education, the W. O. Smith Nashville Community Music School, and the MET Singers, a youth choral ensemble representing Choral Arts Link, where she serves as Artistic and Executive Director.

  sload head shot SLOAN YARBOROUGH - Nashville Singers Associate Director Sloan Yarborough rounds our the faculty for this year;s Acappella Academy. Sloan has spent most of his life here in the Nashville area involved in the arts as a chorus member, studio singer, professional actor, teacher and guitar player. He was the President and Student Conductor of the Auburn University Singers while at Auburn. In 2002, Sloan moved back to Nashville and joined the Hospital Corporation of America in early 2003.  Sloan is passionate about teaching children and taught musical theater at Jan Williams School of Music and Theater in Brentwood for two years. He is also involved with the childrens drama program and music ministry at Christ Presbyterian Church. He is very active in the theater community and has appeared on stage in over 25 shows mostly at the Boiler Room Theater in Franklin. Sloan also serves as Rehearsal Director for the Nashville Choir. He enjoys golf, watching college football (War Eagle!), and hanging out with his nephew Dylan. He resides in Brentwood, Tennessee. Sloan was the President/Board Chair of Nashville Singers in 2012. He currently serves as Associate Director, Bass Section Leader, and on the Music Evaluation Committee. He received the coveted Member of the Year Award for 2012.

Master Class with Dr. Kirby Shaw for Middle & High School Students 

The mission of the Nashville Singers is to enrich lives through singing and the support of music education. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation, we are pleased to offer a FREE vocal performance clinic on "the art of a cappella singing" to middle and high school students There is no fee to participating students.

 

Part one: Master Class on the art of acappella singing (9:00am to 3:00) with 90 minutes of down time for lunch and restroom breaks, and 30 minutes for registration (four hours of actual instruction/clinic time)

Part two: Performance by the host group, the Nashville Singers, a song or two by the Middle and High School kids on their own, and a song combining the Nashville Singers and the kids (3:30pm to 4:30pm)

Part three: Panel discussion with thought leaders in the field of acappella singing, with guest panelists Dr. Kirby Shaw, and Dr. Cedric Dent (formerly of Take 6) (5:00pm to 6:00pm)

Participants: Middle and High School aged singers on their own or with their school choir (Goal: We would love to have 100+ kids participating)

Cost to participants: None

Observers: Parents watching their son or daughter, teachers watching their students, adult musicians/singers wanting to watch Kirby work his magic (Goal: We would love to fill the seats)

Cost to observers: $20 per person, gets them admission to all-day master class, the mini-concert, and opportunity to participate in the panel discussions.Hosted/organized by: The Nashville Singers, Inc.

Bottled water will be provided free of charge to student participants.

Participants and observers can reserve a box lunch and a bottle of water in advance for a nominal fee.
