The WISE NL - Statoil Speaker Series is a regularly scheduled event, open to the public and designed to tell the story of women’s contributions in science and engineering. The series features notable women who speak on science and engineering related topics and who complete the narrative with personal perspectives.

All about bones: insights from fossils & embryos

Dr. Tamara Franz-Odendaal, Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, Mount Saint Vincent University, and NSERC Atlantic Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, will present how we can learn from fossils and embryos.  She will share insights into fundamental biological processes underlying skeletal complexity, space, and health research. She will also step through her career path, which started in South Africa, sharing her personal stories along the way.

About the Author

Dr. Franz-Odendaal is a developmental biologist with a strong background in paleontology. She is interested in animal skeletons; how they have evolved and how they develop. Her research combines the study of fossils (paleontology) with the study of body shape (morphology) and development in living organisms, called Evolutionary Developmental Biology. She is the principal investigator of the Bone Development Laboratory at the Department of Biology, Mount Saint Vincent University. Dr. Franz-Odendaal is currently on the review panel for NSERC Discovery Grants (Cells, Genes and Molecules) and is the Vice-Chair for the Comparative Morphology and Development Division of the Canadian Society of Zoologists.
