April 26-27, 2014 Intro to Digital Photography Workshop

In this weekend immersion class participants will learn how to take greater control of their photography and expand their skills beyond the use of their camera's automatic / program modes to realize their creative vision.

Key topics address photography core concepts as well as knowledge of the digital camera and related equipment including:

  • How to take digital photographs step by step
  • What lens focal length is needed to achieve different looks
  • Camera menu settings, what to set and when
  • Fundamental exposure components : aperture (f/stop), shutter speed and ISO
    • How each component works and how to trouble shoot problems
    • Impact to the image from changing each component
    • The interrelationship between components
    • Understanding "depth of field"
    • Strategies and settings for photographing moving subjects
    • Understanding and minimizing image noise
  • Achieving appropriate image exposure and color
    • Light meter operation, how to read an image histogram and set exposure compensation
    • Setting "white balance" for desired picture color

In addition to classroom learning, participants will have the opportunity to practice what they've learned by conducing photography experiments indoors.

While many of the features and concepts discussed are relevant to all digital cameras including point-and-shoot cameras, more advanced subjects will be applicable only to digital SLR cameras.
