Conference Cancellation Policy - Withdraw from the Spring CPD Conference with full refund less a $75 processing fee provided OSPE is notified in writing no later than Thurs., June 5, 5:00 PM. After that time, registrants are responsible for the full registration fee.

CPD Hours - The Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors does not pre-approve CPD courses nor course-providers.  However, OSPE programs are designed to meet Ohio law and State Board of Registration rules.  The Spring CPD Conference meets continuing professional development (CPD) requirements in many states.  There are 12 CPD hours associated with this program, plus a bonus 0.5 CPD hour for those registering to attend the Legislative Luncheon on Friday.  Professionals should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Sign on-site attendance sheet for each program so that your attendance may be verified in case of State audit.

Contributions, Gifts, Dues & Fees to OSPE are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.  However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses.  Please consult your tax advisor.

Explore information and communication technology systems to see how they help mitigate congestion, improve system transparency for decision-making and provide sustainable solutions.  Learn about Intelligent Transportation Systems, Intelligent Freight Technologies and Geographic Information Systems.  Sarah Schafer is a PhD candidate and instructor in the College of Business & Innovation at the University of Toledo. She studies supply chain management and logistics, examining the use of technology and system practices on transportation performance. Schafer has a master’s with a focus in GIS and transportation.

Senator Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green) will speak about engineering issues advancing in Ohio’s legislature.  He is serving his first term in the Ohio Senate, having previously served in both that Chamber and in the Ohio House.  A member of the Senate Finance Committee, he is chair of its Subcommittee on Education, as well as the Senate's committees on transportation and workforce and economic development.  Separate registration required. The Maritime Academy of Toledo is the only marine deck, engine and culinary High School Career Tech Education program in the U.S.  Learn how Maritime Career Technical Education works, how deck versus engineering is differentiated; about the simulator capabilities and how it can be used for education and for training; the various types of engineers and their roles throughout the maritime industry; and wages and employment opportunities for entry, mid and advanced level marine engineers in the Great Lakes exceed other non-engineering positions.

Good Chair in Global Supply Chain Strategy at Bowling Green State University. He earned his PhD in management sciences and logistics from The Ohio State University.  His research interests include mass transit systems, maritime logistics, healthcare supply chains, global logistics strategy, supply chain security and benchmarking.

"Multiple-Criteria Decision Making in Transportation Asset Management"

In transportation asset management, challenging decisions often must be made to allocate limited resources among various programs/assets and to select competing projects to be included in the immediate work plan.  These decisions require consideration of multiple objectives or criteria. Learn about a new tool, based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process, that can help with such decisions. Both the methodology and the result of an actual case will be presented.  Eddie Chou, PhD, PE, is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Toledo and director of the Transportation Systems Research Laboratory.

"Freight Railroading: A Study in Costs & Benefits"

Learn how railroads make infrastructure investment decisions; social economies of public policy for commercial freight modes; the economies of public-private partnerships; and an overview of new technologies and systems in freight rail. Bill Harris is assistant VP of government relations for Norfolk Southern.  In Ohio, he helped develop and implement public-private partnerships to construct Rickenbacker Intermodal Terminal, the Heartland Corridor and the Heartland Connector, and to double the capacity of Airline Intermodal Yard.  He has a master’s in engineering management.

"Sensors for the Construction, Monitoring & Assessment of Transportation Structures"

This seminar will cover a series of case studies on the application of a range of sensors during the lives of transportation structures, including local bridges. Learn the use of sensors to resolve or reduce uncertainty and help designers and operators increase safety, maximize the efficiency and reduce the life cycle costs of transportation structures.  Doug Nims, PhD, PE, is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toledo.  He earned his PhD in structural engineering, mechanics and materials. Nims was the 2009 recipient of OSPE’s Outstanding Engineering Educator Award.

"Creating Sustainable Bikesharing"

Participants will learn the current market of bikesharing; the technical challenges of keeping a modern bikesharing system up and running; and bringing together mobile technology and the cloud to create sustainable bikesharing.  Ansgar Strother, founder and CEO of A2B Bikeshare, is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering.  He drew on his knowledge and experience to create the “smart bike-dumb rack” system.  Carl Vitullo oversees all technical aspects of A2B Bikeshare, including the mechanical design of the lock modules.
