Managing Playgrounds and Playdates

Presented by:
Melanie Salort, OTR/L

Wednesday, May 21, 2014
7:00 - 8:30PM EST

Evening Lectures are live events that take place once a month at OTA The Koomar Center in Newton, Massachusetts. They are one and half hour presentations geared towards parents, education professionals, and therapists. Evening Lectures are not recorded.

Making and playing with friends is a critical part of a child's development, but for children with sensory problems learning to do so appropriately can be a challenge. This evening lecture, presented by Melanie Salort, will discuss practical strategies to facilitate children’s successful engagement with peers on the playground and during playdates. Participants will also learn strategies for selecting sensory-friendly playgrounds that accommodate the individual child's needs, as well as how to recognize potential problems and ways to intervene before they start.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify characteristics of sensory-friendly playgrounds for children with SPD.
  2. Describe key red flags that can negatively impact success on the playground or during playdates.
  3. Discuss how to apply the strategies presented to facilitate successful peer interactions on the playground and during play dates.

Melanie is a Licensed and Certified Occupational Therapist.  She received her Bachelors Degree from Quinnipiac University. She has been working at OTA since 2003.  Prior to working at OTA, she worked in Early Intervention.  In 2003 she completed the Comprehensive Program in Sensory Integration and is SIPT certified.  Additional to training in Sensory Integration, she is a certified provider for Therapeutic Listening, The Listening Program, and Integrated Listening Systems.  Other specialized trainings that Melanie has received are CranioSacral therapy and feeding and oral motor therapies.  Outside interests include being an advocate for natural childbirth and mother-infant bonding.  She also enjoys salsa dancing.
