Abstract

The use of MALDI-TOF-MS for standard bacterial typing at the species level has been extensively reviewed and is now widely accepted in the clinical environment.  Here we will aim to present a snapshot of how MALDI can be implemented beyond simple microbial identification.  This includes the in-depth characterization of microbial strains and their ability to confer resistance to a wide spectrum of -lactam antibiotics, but also the use of current library based approaches in food typing.

The presentation will begin by setting the scene from a clinical view point through the presentation of a typical clinical case.  We will then present an example of the way in which MALDI-TOF MS may be used to detect resistances markers. Finally, we will conclude by giving a brief example of how SARAMIS may be used to differentiate between types of milk and cheese, ultimately allowing us to detect evidence of food adulteration.
