The Oldman Watershed Council's (OWC) much anticipated and inspiring Prairie Urban Garden Tour has been set for Saturday, June 21st, 2014 and we hope you can join us!

The OWC is pleased to bring you the tour, as part of our mission to promote water conservation and improve stormwater quality in the Oldman watershed. The tour highlights the beauty and benefits of having a xeriscaped yard by showcasing Lethbridge xeriscapes that feature low maintenance, drought-tolerant and native plants that require little to no water to thrive, once established. Xeriscapes improve stormwater quality by reducing or eliminating the need for unnatural fertilizers and pesticides in order to thrive, therefore reducing pollution in runoff. Find lots of resources to build your own Prairie Urban Garden at www.prairieurbangarden.ca.

How it works:

  • Arrive any time between 10am - 2pm at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre to pick up your map to the gardens, view informational displays and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
  • Xeriscaping presentation by local garden design consultant, Steve MacRae of Prairie Xeriscape Designs, at  10:15am at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.
  • Presentation at 2:00pm  about rainwater harvesting and lawn management to reduce weed growth and pesticide use by local landscaper Verlin Torkelson of BlueGrass Landscaping. This presentation will take place in the Centre Court at Park Place Mall.  Check out BlueGrass's garden in the mall, enter to win this rain barrel, view informational displays, ask questions of Verlin and the OWC and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

In past years, up to 145 people have come out for the self-guided tour.  It is obvious that  prairie urban gardens are making their mark in Lethbridge - not only because they conserve and protect water quality by utilizing plants that naturally thrive in our dry prairie environment and therefore require less water, pesticides and fertilizers (maintenance!) than traditional lawns, but because they are absolutely beautiful and aesthetically pleasing - it is possible!
