"Behind the Scenes" in Prince George's County

Join Preservation Maryland on Saturday, June 7 as we get an up close look at three wonderful historic sites in Prince George's County.  On this field trip, you will learn about the recent restoration work at Montpelier Mansion, discuss preservation issues in Historic Greenbelt, and see ongoing work at Riversdale.

Your day will start with a tour of Montpelier Mansion.  This five-part Georgian mansion (c1785) situated on a knoll above the Patuxent River features beautiful views and a boxwood lined garden.  The house just recently reopened for tours after an extensive restoration which included the installation of a new drainage system to mitigate water seepage in the foundation.  You will have a chance to go "behind the scenes" and climb to the attic where you can see the support structure for the hipped roof.

You will then make your way six miles south to Historic Greenbelt.  This planned community was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Resettlement Adminstration to provide affordable housing for low income workers.  Residents in Greenbelt deal with preservation issues on a daily basis as they balance the desire to preserve the historic feel of the community and the desire for larger, more energy efficient homes.  During this visit, you will tour the community center, walk through town and see the inside of one of the homes.

The last stop of the day is Riversdale, a five-part Federal mansion completed in 1807.  Letters from Rosalie Stier Calvert, the mistress of Riversdale from 1803 to 1821, provide a wealth of information that has been used in the restoration and interpretation of the house.  You will visit the mansion in the midst of major roof repairs and learn about the innovative geothermal heating and cooling system used in the house.

At each property, a local expert will take our group on a private tour tailored just for us.  Come see some beautiful buildings, stroll in lovely gardens, and discuss current preservation issues and solutions.

The price of this field trip, which includes lunch, is:
$30 for Preservation Maryland members
$35 for non-members and
$20 for students

Space is limited, so sign up today to enjoy a great day in Prince George's County!
