Tom Hoffman
Pastel Portrait Drawing Workshop
Tom Hoffman, Artist and Adjunct Professor from the University of Utah Art Department, is coming to 21st Studios! He will concentrate on drawing the portrait using just pastel / charcoal on blue paper.
Learn to create subtle temperature changes in a portrait with a limited set of pastel and charcoal. In this workshop, you will learn Tom's unique method of creating the illusion of a full pastel-color box with just three or four colors, on a blue paper ground. What Tom says about his workshop:
"I’ve found that the human flesh palette runs from warm, more yellow, to cool rose. I developed this method as a way of exploring this temperature difference. Using a very minimal palette consisting of two sanguine pastel pencils, black and white charcoal and blue paper it is possible to reflect the entire range of skin color. It’s the sequence of what goes down first and in what quantity that determines the final temperature. We will begin drawing spherical forms and culminate in an extended portrait drawing from a model."
The workshop will be held from 9:00am-4:00pm each day.
