Business Plan 1: Laying the Groundwork 8-28-14

In this, the first of the four business planning workshops, we will discuss the purpose and organization of your business plan, and begin the planning process by concentrating on defining the marketplace.  Topics to be address include:

  • The business plan outline, and the recommended process for its development.
  • Crafting your mission statement.
  • Developing a comprehensive description of your business.
  • How to identify your target customers.
  • Development of the Attribute Importance Table – a key tool for evaluating your competitive position in the marketplace.
  • How to identify and characterize your competition.

This workshop sets the stage for the critical task of identifying your competitive advantage, and leveraging that advantage through your marketing program.

 

Presenter:

Lori Treadwell, owner/operator of a family owned wholesale optical laboratory for over 38 years.  Knowledgeable in all aspects of running the business; able to work with and mentor many different employee personalities while focusing on production schedules and quality issues. In 2011, I sold the business and am now Chair of COLA (California Optical Laboratories Association) which is a non-profit organization which donates time and money to schools and other charities. I have been involved in all aspects of the wholesale optical business: production supervisor, purchasing, accounting, data entry, customer service, all lab work, and anything else that needed to be done including janitorial.  In that time I developed strong personal relationships with my customers, I feel that in small business, this is the key to success.

John Wham is a graduate electrical engineer with approximately 25 years’ experience in design and development of both military and commercial systems, beginning as an entry-level engineer and culminating as the Chief Engineer of a major division of a large electronics company. John co-founded a software development company and was in charge of product design and development. The company’s software products included a distributed project management system, regulation-compliant security system, and a sales force automation system, which became the flagship product of the company during the last 10 years of operation. He also served as President of the company for 4 years leading up to the time it was sold.
